Paddling the Emerald Tunnels of Lovers Key State Park

Just south of Fort Myers Beach lies a barrier island oasis. Lovers Key State Park isn't just known for its pristine beaches; the true draw for the paddle community is the intricate network of mangrove tunnels lining the bay side of the park.

The 2.5 Mile Estero Bay Trail

The park features a well-marked 2.5-mile loop trail specifically designed for non-motorized craft. The start of the trail is wide open, crossing a shallow seagrass flat where you can often spot stingrays gliding just beneath your board. But soon, the markers guide you right into the thick of the mangrove forest.

Logistics: Where to Drop In

Drive past the main beach entrance and pull into the boat ramp area on the bay side. There is a nominal state park fee (usually around $8/vehicle). The launch itself is a soft sand inlet right next to the kayak rental facility — incredibly easy on your board and fins.

Why We Love It

Once inside the canopy, the outside world disappears. The dense root systems of the red mangroves act as a nursery for juvenile fish, crabs, and birds. It's perfectly quiet, perfectly still, and purely Florida.
